Tanzania is one of the best destinations for seeing the Big Five: lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhinoceros. Sightings are never guaranteed because wildlife is free-ranging, but our guides use their experience and local knowledge to maximize opportunities.
Depending on the park and season, you may see elephants, lions, leopards, cheetahs, buffalo, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, hippos, crocodiles, wild dogs, antelope and many bird species.
There is no single best park for everyone. Serengeti is famous for its wildlife and migration, Ngorongoro offers exceptional concentration of animals, Tarangire is known for elephants and baobabs, while Mikumi, Nyerere and Ruaha are excellent choices for the southern circuit.
A 3–5 day safari can provide a rewarding introduction, while 6–10 days allows you to combine several parks and reduce driving pressure. The ideal duration depends on your budget, interests and arrival point.
For peak travel periods, booking several months in advance is recommended, especially for popular lodges and Serengeti migration areas. Last-minute trips may also be possible depending on availability.

Tipping is customary but discretionary. A common approach is to tip guides and camp staff at the end of the safari based on service quality. Your operator can provide a suggested tipping guideline for your specific itinerary.
Many hotels, lodges and established tour operators accept major cards, but card availability can vary in remote areas and additional fees may apply. It is wise to carry some cash as a backup.
The Tanzanian Shilling (TZS) is the local currency. US dollars are widely used in tourism, particularly for safari services, although you should carry some local currency for smaller purchases.
Entry requirements depend on your country of departure and travel history. A yellow fever certificate may be required in certain circumstances. Consult a qualified travel-health professional well before your trip for current advice.
Travel insurance is strongly recommended. Your policy should ideally cover medical treatment, emergency evacuation, trip cancellation and baggage or travel delays.
Pack lightweight neutral-coloured clothing, a warm layer for early mornings, comfortable shoes, a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, insect repellent, personal medication, a reusable water bottle and a camera. Soft luggage is often easier for safari vehicles and small aircraft.
Tanzania is a popular safari destination and most visitors have a safe and enjoyable trip. Follow your guide's instructions, use reputable transport, protect valuables and take normal precautions in towns and cities.
The Great Migration moves throughout the Serengeti and Maasai Mara ecosystem during the year. Calving is generally around January to March in the southern Serengeti, while river crossings in the northern Serengeti are usually associated with July to October. Exact timing depends on rainfall and animal movements.
Tanzania is a year-round safari destination. June to October is popular for dry-season wildlife viewing, while January to March is excellent for the wildebeest calving season in the Serengeti. November to May can offer fewer crowds and good value.
Most international visitors need a visa to enter Tanzania. Many nationalities can apply for an eVisa before travel, while some can obtain a visa on arrival. We recommend checking the current immigration requirements for your nationality before booking flights.
